What second life batteries mean to Connected Energy

The Connected Energy team values sustainability and recognise our repurposing of EV batteries as a crucial part of the energy transition.

Second life EV batteries are truly at the heart of Connected Energy’s mission to produce a sustainable solution to the growing reliance on renewable generation, as well as tackling numerous energy challenges.

In our final blog post, in our #SecondLifeFirst series, we asked some of our team to tell us why they value sustainability and why second life EV batteries are imperative to that shared goal.

Rob Moore, Chief Business Development Officer (Utility Scale)

“BESS, to me, means enabling non-emitting generation to penetrate electricity networks around the world as quickly as possible. That’s hugely important for the energy transition.

“The circular economy approach taken by Connected Energy with second life batteries can make that happen whilst minimising the negative environmental impact potentially associated with manufacturing new batteries.

“Finally, it’s a huge opportunity. A massive volume of second life batteries is coming out of EVs, and deploying it to enable PV and wind is a chance to build a really large and exciting business.”

Moritz Dornbusch, Programme Manager

“To me second life BESS is a way to combine my previous experience in battery manufacturing company with the opportunity of creating a real impact for the environment and society.

“It is important to my role, as I believe we have the chance to deliver great products that will support the world’s targets towards a more sustainable future!”

Anya Bramich, Head of Marketing

“My background is electric vehicles and I’ve worked in the industry since 2010 – I met Matthew working on one of the UK’s very first electric vehicle trials.

“I’ve worked on many awareness campaigns about the benefits of electric cars and one of the biggest criticisms that people put forward is what happens to the battery at the end of its life.

“I had watched Connected Energy’s growth over the last few years and was keen to join a company that was solving this challenge.”

Andy Riches, Hardware Manager

“Battery energy storage was the concept that really drew me into Connected Energy when I first joined the company post-Masters in 2018. I am from Great Yarmouth and a lot of the roles there, as you can imagine, are for offshore engineers in the oil and gas sectors.

“For me, I did want to be part of something that is better for the environment, and there are lots of solar and wind farms in that part of the world which validated my interest in a career in renewables.

“Battery energy storage allowed me to focus on renewables as solar and wind very much integrate into the need for energy storage.

“Since joining the company the way I have watched the company’s second life product offering flourish and the technology and creativity that is going into our solution has fuelled my drive to use my skills to help make the world a better place.”

Farangis Tabibi, Electrical Design Engineer

“I recently immigrated from Iran to the UK. Although the level of air pollution in numerous cities and areas of Iran is high and it is inappropriate and dangerous, due to the abundance of non renewable energy resources such as oil, gas, and coal, and the provision of personal benefits, the government does not want to supply energy from renewable sources and use electric cars.

“The issue of using second-life batteries is very interesting to me because first and foremost, the existence of electric cars provides its benefits, and secondly, the battery with high production costs, rich materials, and high quality, will return to the industry cycle after a few years, and there is no need for high recycling costs.

“I worked in an industry that provided the power sources needed to extract minerals to make batteries such as Antimony, Cadmium, Cobalt, Zinc, etc. Therefore the value of these materials and their high extraction costs are obvious to me.”
