Maximising the value of EV batteries through utility scale energy storage

Connected Energy is scaling up from commercial battery storage to utility scale battery energy storage to maximise the financial value of EV batteries.

Repurposing EV batteries into utility scale battery energy storage – provides an enormous opportunity for battery owners and automotive OEMs as the volumes of used EV batteries increases. We spoke to Rob Moore, our Chief Business Development Officer, about how Connected Energy is gearing up for the future.

Utility scale storage sites, where battery energy storage systems are connected to the electrical grid to provide flexibility, time shift energy, and enable greater penetration of renewable generators like wind and solar, represent an opportunity to maximise the financial value of EV batteries while reducing their carbon and environmental impact.

Rob, says: “While most BESS to date have been constructed with new batteries, second life battery storage technology has been proven many times over in industrial and commercial settings participating in all the same electricity markets and with clear warranties and service level agreements. This was confirmed by a study by Timera Energy that found that the dispatch characteristics of second life batteries allow them to capture almost identical revenues from energy trading and flexibility services when compared to first life BESS.”

Fortuitously, the project pipeline for utility scale battery energy storage is also experiencing a surge. National Grid’s Future Energy Scenarios (FES) forecasts that energy storage capacity will increase more than ten-fold by 2050 – from 3GW to 47GW, a growth which will place a significant increase in the demand for batteries.

“To support EV manufacturers to diversify into repurposing EV batteries in utility scale storage, different contractual models will emerge to match their appetite for risk and reward. Some EV OEMs may prefer to sell the batteries to a third-party battery energy storage developer rather than jump in directly. Others may prefer to retain ownership of the batteries and work in collaboration with a developer to take a flat monthly fee or percentage of the revenue generated by the utility scale battery installation. The same model could also be applied to EV fleet owners who are interested in maximising the return on investment of their fleet vehicles.”

Repurposing EV batteries in this way will provide a much higher return than that achieved by recycling. That value is also additional to the recycling value, as once the battery capacity falls to below BESS limits they can be interchanged with another second life battery and sent for recycling with minimal disruption to the system.

As the UK Battery Strategy sets out, the country has the potential to become a global leader in battery technology, fostering innovation, creating high-skilled jobs, and boosting the economy. At the same time, EV manufacturers will see increasing pressure to get the most value out of the mining, processing, manufacture, shipping and recycling of their batteries. This could be considered a risk, but with second life storage it represents a substantial economic opportunity that we have yet to exploit.

Embracing the opportunity to repurpose EV batteries into utility scale battery energy storage will create many benefits, from lowering the lifecycle carbon footprint of a battery, and improving the return on investment to reducing the UK’s dependence on imported critical minerals and supporting the energy transition.
