Michael Salvador has recently joined the team as our new Head of Product Innovation. With a wealth of experience in energy storage and systems engineering, Michael will lead the charge in advancing our battery energy storage products.

Michael began his career with a degree in electrical engineering and automation, culminating in a PhD in systems engineering which cemented his path towards a career in engineering solutions. Michael shares his insights on what attracted him to the industry, the challenges and benefits ahead and what his role at Connected Energy will entail.

Tackling the industry's complexities

As the renewables sector grows, the complexities of managing solar and wind become more apparent. The key challenge is not just technical but ideological. The industry tends to idealize renewable energy, ignoring the downsides like waste and scalability hurdles. As one of my mentors used to say: “The most dangerous people in engineering are those who operate on faith rather than facts.”

Our industry needs to address these issues head-on. Connected Energy’s unique approach to reusing batteries speaks directly to this, solving some of the most pressing concerns around waste and resource efficiency. It’s one of the reasons I’m excited to be here – working with a great team to pioneer solutions that bring long-term value to our customers and partners.

Focusing on optimisation of battery energy storage systems

At Connected Energy, I will be focussed on optimising our battery energy storage products. We’re working on innovations including our M-STOR product and our own development sites, which are designed not just to store energy, but to make storage safer, more efficient, and profitable. Energy storage is crucial to integrating non-pilotable renewables into the grid, but the challenge is greater than scaling technology – it’s also about making these systems appealing to asset owners, practical in their application, and durable in the long term.

Innovating with second life batteries

Significant investments in R&D have led to remarkable advancements in lithium-ion battery technology – from improving chemistry stability to boosting energy and power density, as well as extending battery lifecycle. But the next innovation lies in maximising the use of these cells, especially as they reach a lower State of Health.

This is what Connected Energy is doing. We are pioneering a solution that gives second life batteries a new purpose by creating an alternative to first-life, BESS through state-of-the-art system integration. Our goal is to close the economic gap between first life and second life battery energy storage, providing customers with cost-effective options while offering manufacturers an alternative to moving their batteries directly into recycling.

Building a policy framework for success

Looking forward, policy frameworks will play a critical role. To truly unlock the potential of energy storage, we need stable, long-term regulation that ensures predictable pricing for renewables like solar, wind, and battery systems. This would help utilities and private investors plan and execute projects with greater confidence, mitigating the uncertainties that come with fluctuating markets.

The energy transition is complicated, but by being transparent about its challenges – and opportunities – we can design better systems. The best energy is the energy we don’t use. Efficiency, innovation, and honesty will guide us to a more resilient future, and I’m thrilled to help lead this charge at Connected Energy.
