A Day in the Life of… A Hardware Manager at Connected Energy

Andy joined the company as a graduate six years ago and has worked his way up the ladder to become our Hardware Manager.

The ‘A Day in the Life of…’ series is designed to introduce the different roles and a cross-section of team members across our Newcastle, Norfolk and remote-working teams – this week it’s Andy Riches, our Hardware Manager in Connected Energy’s Hethel-based technical centre.

Andy joined our team back in 2018 as a Master’s graduate from Great Yarmouth, with the hope of joining a clean energy business as opposed to the perhaps more commonplace offshore roles that are available locally with the oil and gas industry.

Since graduating with his Master’s in Electrical Engineering from Loughborough University, and with a placement year at power management company, Eaton, under his belt, Andy joined the business as we were testing and developing the concept for our E-STOR 300kW/360kWh system, and hit the ground running getting involved in real-life applications.

“I wanted to be part of something better for the environment, and there are lots of solar and wind farms in this part of the world which validated my interest in a career in renewables. Battery energy storage allowed me to focus on renewables as solar and wind go hand-in-hand with the need for energy storage.”

Andy added: “My first year at Connected Energy was all about getting immersed in the electrical design of our product, and getting hands-on experience with projects which has collectively proved invaluable as both Connected Energy and my role has evolved.”

Being part of our team for six years means Andy has seen the true evolution of our product and, at a cornerstone moment when we are launching M-STOR, a utility scale battery energy storage product, his expertise has resulted in him being promoted to our Hardware Manager. Now responsible for the electrical design, mechanical design, and test and assembly teams, he is now supporting a large part of our talented workforce.

Andy said: “Originally my role was electrical design focused but since then I’ve covered so many projects and had a various responsibilities meaning I have a lot of experiences to draw from and engage our team with.”

“I’m lucky to have the team that I have – every one of them is always hard at work, happy to take on a challenge, and have a laugh along the way – all of those attributes are vital for the innovative work we do!”

A key part of our team, with his expertise and hands-on involvement in a variety of our major projects and behind-the-scenes work on developing our E-STOR and M-STOR products, Andy credits supporting and helping the team develop as his proudest achievement to date.

Andy said: “Coming to Connected Energy as a graduate six years ago and being able to see not just my own career growth but that of the team – as well as the fact we’ve literally doubled in size in 12 months – is by far my biggest achievement.

“It’s exciting to be on the Connected Energy rollercoaster, seeing our ambitions as an organisation being realised, and I can’t wait to see where we end up in another six years.”

Outside of work, Andy is busy planning for a 2025 wedding with his fiancée, but he’s also a self-taught mixologist after building a home Tiki bar during the pandemic.  As a result, he promises us he’s working on developing a Connected Energy cocktail – which we can’t wait to try!
